RED TAG Furnaces

When your heating appliance is RED-TAGGED by one of our technicians, it's unsafe to operate and must be shut down immediately. Learn what causes RED TAGS, why they're issued, and how BC Furnace can quickly restore your heating safely.

What is a RED TAG?

RED TAGGING means your natural gas appliance has been identified as unsafe to operate and cannot be used until repaired or replaced. When BC Furnace’s Service and Safety Inspection Specialists find an unsafe condition, they immediately shut off the appliance and place a red tag on it. The gas supply is disconnected until repairs are completed and the system passes re-inspection.

Why do furnaces get RED TAGGED?

The most common and serious problem is if a heat exchanger is cracked or blocked in your furnaces and boilers. This is extremely dangerous because it allows carbon monoxide to leak into your home. Carbon monoxide poisoning can prove to be fatal, which is why annual furnace inspections are so important.

Carbon monoxide is nearly impossible to detect on your own because it’s colourless, odourless and tasteless.

Our professional testing equipment can detect carbon monoxide at just 2 ppm, while household detectors need much higher levels before they sound an alarm. We still recommend having at least two carbon monoxide detectors in your home and replacing them every three to five years. Be careful not to mistake Smoke Alarms for Carbon Monoxide Detector/Alarms.

Other Reasons For a RED TAG include:

  • Fire hazards from damaged parts
  • Electrical problems
  • Carbon monoxide leaks from other sources
  • Gas leaks
  • Blocked or broken exhaust pipes
  • Improper venting setup
